Even the beautiful rural landscape of Wales offers no escape from evil, as social worker Jess discovers when she moves there from London. With her previous harrowing cases left behind she had hoped for a simpler, more fulfilling way of life...but a grim discovery soon puts an end to that.

The body of a young boy is found in the woods close to Jess's new home, and her worst nightmare becomes reality when she realises he was a child she was supposed to protect. As her professional life becomes harder to control, Jess is forced to come to terms with her own past when someone unexpectedly reappears, someone she thought was lost forever. She finds herself crossing the line from investigator to victim, forced to question the very basis of her identity, and she can only wonder: who's there to protect the protector?
