Following the government's attack on Los Angeles, Ruby and the other survivors are travelling north. With them is a prisoner, Clancy Gray. He is the son of the president, and one of the few people who has abilities like Ruby's - and the potential to wreak havoc. All this group is armed with is a volatile secret about a cover-up of the disease that has killed most of America's young people.

Once reunited with Liam, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. So it is his older brother Cole whom Ruby turns to, as it is his intense training that will help take down Gray and the government.

But can Cole be trusted when he has demons of his own to deal with?
